War Memorials in Sowerby, North Yorkshire

Remembrance service at the Sowerby War Memorial, 12 November 2006 The Sowerby War Memorial is on the village green outside St Oswald's Church, Sowerby, Thirsk, North Yorkshire. There are also memorials inside St Oswald's Church and Sowerby Methodist Church.

The lists of names on the memorials are slightly different. Sowerby War Memorial (a red granite cross) records the initials and family names of men who died in both World Wars (marked 1 in the tables below). In St Oswald's Church there are two marble memorials, one records the full names of men who died in World War One (marked 2 in the tables below), the other records the full names of men who died in World War Two (marked 3 in the tables below). In the Methodist Church a brass memorial records the initials and family names of men who died in World War One (marked 4 in the tables below) and two oak chairs record the full names of men who died in World War Two (marked 5 in the tables below).

Further information, where known, is given about each man who made the ultimate sacrifice. Information starting with a question mark (?) is based on name alone and may be wrong. Web links indicate the sources of information - Commonwealth War Graves Commission (cwgc), War Graves Photographic Project (wgpp), UK National Inventory of War Memorials (ukniwm), The Yorkshire Regiment, First World War (ww1y) and the man's family (family).

If you have further information about, or photographs of, the men remembered on this page please email webmaster@sowerby.org.uk
